Limited Editions and Blu-ray Disc!

We’re pleased to announce two limited-edition versions of Objectified designed by our friends over at Build, and the Blu-ray disc edition of the film. Available for pre-order now!

USB Limited Edition
Fixed media? Meh. We’ve put a digital copy of the DVD on a tiny, custom-printed 16gb USB drive. Copy the file to your hard drive, watch the movie, and then use the nice little USB stick for all the things you normally use a USB stick. The anti-static bag is stuffed with five letterpress mini-posters and an Objectified badge designed by Build, plus a color C-print of a still from the film signed by director Gary Hustwit. Each copy also comes with one of the Objectified tote bags by Build. Limited edition of 500 copies, $75. Pre-order now.

DVD Limited Edition
Still using those shiny plastic discs to watch movies? We’ve also made a limited-edition DVD package, including the same letterpress mini-posters, badge, and signed still as the USB version, but with the DVD of the film and extras (NTSC, all-region). Plus the free tote bag. Limited edition of 500 copies, $75. Pre-order now.

Blu-ray Disc
Blu-ray fanatics, we heard you: pre-order the Blu-ray disc and watch the film and extras in their native high-definition format. Each Blu-ray pre-order comes with one of the Objectified tote bags by Build. Pre-order now and save $5 off the retail price of $34.95.

About pre-orders: your credit card will be charged when you place the order, and your copy will ship October 6. Limited-edition and Blu-ray pre-orders cannot be combined with other merchandise.

    Excellent news.
I just wanted clarification of whether the USB LTD ED movie file is in High Definition or Standard Definition.
This clarification will help me choose and order in the next hour! Thanks!

    ms danielle says:

awesome, thank you for tweeting this! does the USB come with the “extras” as well? or is that just if you purchase the dvd?

can’t wait to watch again and share with everyone i know. really enjoyed the LA screening, thanks for the wonderful Q&A after!

  3. August 24th, 2009 at 7:23 pm

    Meghan says:

I already pre-ordered the DVD with tote because you said there was no Blu ray! Can I switch my Pre-Order?

  4. August 24th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

    Stic says:

The post says “custom-printed 8gb USB drive” when the packaging says it’s a “16-gigabyte USB” – which is it?

  5. August 24th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

    gary says:

Thanks Luke, the USB file is standard definition.

  6. August 24th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

    Tim says:

Man the USB limited edition isn’t HD? What an odd collectible.

  7. August 25th, 2009 at 1:31 am

    gary says:

@Stic – Argh! It is a 16gb drive. Fixed the text, sorry for the confusion.

  8. August 25th, 2009 at 1:35 am

    gary says:

    @ms danielle – Yes.

@meghan – You can cancel the standard DVD order (info in the receipt you were emailed) and then order the Blu-ray version if you’d like. But we can’t “swap” the order, unfortunately.

  9. August 25th, 2009 at 10:34 am

    Mark says:

So I tried to have my original order for the SD-DVD cancelled with Plexifilm/Music Today to get the Blu-Ray and I was told I couldn’t. I was told the following: “Since this DVD is a Pre-Order, we cannot cancel this order but we can change it to the Blu-Ray disc if that product is available on our webstore site. I just checked and I do not see the Blu-Ray version.”

    So what’s the deal here?

  10. August 25th, 2009 at 11:23 am

    Vincent says:

Thanks Gary for the Blu-Ray. I’ve just make my order.

  11. August 25th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

    gary says:

@Mark – We’re talking with Music Today now, and they’ll be adding the Blu-ray to their store in the next day or so. So you’ll be able to swap your standard DVD pre-order for the Blu-ray (plus the difference in price of course) later this week.

    tj says:

    silly question perhaps…
for the USB limited edition, can the digital copy of the dvd (that is to be copied onto the hard drive of your computer) be burned onto a dvd so that it can be played on a dvd player instead of just watching it on your computer?

  13. August 25th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

    tj says:

    another silly question…
i pre-ordered 2 copies of the special edition dvd, is it possible to cancel one of the special orders and change it to the special edition usb version?

  14. August 25th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

    matthew harrison smith says:

can we see the USB stick up close / high-res? im glad you are making this option available.

  15. August 25th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

    Harry says:

I really want to pre-order the limited edition USB-stick, but inlike the normal dvd, one can’t pay through Pay-Pal, since I don’t have a credit card. Is there a way to purchuse through Pay-Pal. I’m dying to buy the USB-stick version!

  16. August 25th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

    gary says:

@tj – Yes, you can burn a DVD from the file on the USB drive and watch it that way if you’d like. And yes, you can change a DVD special edition to a USB special edition in your order, just email info[at]objectifiedfilm[dot]com

@harry – I’ll have someone contact you, we can arrange to accept Paypal. Or you could just get a friend to order it on their card and pay them!

    @matthew – Here you go:

  17. August 25th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

    Adam B says:

    Gary,

Just wanted to thank you for offering the Blu-ray option. Although the format has had a slow take off, it will enhance experience all around. I have the limited DVD release of Helvetica and purchased the Blu-ray option as well. Needless to say, the full experience in 1080p resolution is unbeatable. Keep the great documentaries coming and thanks again!

  18. August 25th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

    Gareth says:

What you should do is a special HD edition, which combines the Blu-ray disk with USB digital copies, specifically formatted for Apple TV and iPhone / iPod touch.

I would pay good money for that. I’m not bothered about the tote bag.

  19. August 25th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

    Taso g. says:

    Gary-

Thanks for the blu-ray! We asked, you delivered.

    Thank you so much!

  20. August 26th, 2009 at 2:05 am

    Harry says:

    Gary,

Thank you so much for the effort. I’m looking forward to your contact’s email regarding Pay-Pal! Very much appreciated.

  21. August 26th, 2009 at 2:26 am

    Michael says:

    Gary

Thanks for making the Blu-ray version available. I was one of those folks whining for the blu-ray version. I just ordered one.
    Thanks!

  22. August 26th, 2009 at 4:55 am

    Gareth says:

    Hi Gary

Great news on the Blu-Ray front, just one more small question to add to the collection here — what packaging does the Blu-Ray come in? The snazzy foil packaging as seen above or just a standard Blu-ray case?

    Will pre-order immediately -

    Best.

  23. August 26th, 2009 at 6:56 am

    Matt A. says:

    Gary,
Thanks so much for including the Blu-Ray option! I, too, am trying to switch my existing DVD pre-order to a Blu-Ray order, so please do let us all (and, you know, me specifically :-)) know when the requisite stuff is in place for that to happen. I can’t wait to see your fantastic film again!

  24. August 26th, 2009 at 11:19 am

    gary says:

Okay: if you pre-ordered the standard DVD from Plexifilm/Music Today, you can now switch your order to the Blu-ray disc if you’d like. Call 877-687-4277 or email merchandise[at]musictoday.com with your order info and they’ll set you up. If you pre-ordered the DVD from Greedbag in the UK and want to switch to Blu-ray, we’re getting that set up too. Thanks all!

  25. August 26th, 2009 at 11:20 am

    gary says:

@Gareth – the Blu-ray is in a standard blue Blu-ray plastic case, NOT the limited-edition foil pack.

  26. August 26th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

    Matt A. says:

Just wanted to chime in here and say that the Blu-ray pre-order upgrade seems to have gone fine. I called Music Today, and their customer service guys had been given an email with details about the upgrade and how to put it into their system. Took about 3 minutes. Thanks for the info, Gary!

  27. August 26th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

    gary says:

No worries, Matt. And sorry all for the delayed Blu-ray announcement, we really didn’t think there’d be enough demand for it. Nice to be proven wrong I guess!

  28. August 27th, 2009 at 4:50 am

    Thijs van der Vossen says:

I’d love to be able to buy a 720p HD download version. I don’t own a TV, can’t play Blu-Ray on my Mac, and I have no need for physical media. I’m probably not the only one in this regard. ;)

With a download version your margins can be higher, your work will be pirated anyway, and you can get additional sales from impulse buyers like me, and because sharing a big file is actually much more of a hassle than lending out a disc.

Buying through iTunes is sadly not an option for me because I’m from The Netherlands and for some reason Apple doesn’t sell Movies in their local iTunes stores.

  29. August 27th, 2009 at 7:03 am

    gary says:

Thanks Thijs, we’re working on a few other download options which should be in place prior to the release date. I wish iTunes movies were available everywhere, but they’re not, so we want to have at least one download option that can be accessed globally. Stay tuned.

  30. August 27th, 2009 at 7:15 am

    Thijs van der Vossen says:

That’s awesome news Gary, thanks for working on this.

  31. August 27th, 2009 at 7:53 am

    Jasper Hauser says:

I agree that having a globally downloadable version of the documentary would be a very good idea. Like Thijs mentions, in the Netherlands and other countries iTunes is somewhat limiting. And this documentary is certainly worth spreading in as many ways as possible.

    Julia says:

Just wondering when you will be sending out the pre-orders?

  33. September 6th, 2009 at 9:40 am

    Jordi says:

    hi,
Does it have any kind of subtitles? (spanish, for example).

  34. September 6th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

    gary says:

@ julia- As it says right up at the top, limited edition and blu-ray pre-orders ship September 29. Standard DVDs ship one week before that.

@ Jordi – There are English subtitles on the DVD and special editions.

  35. September 7th, 2009 at 2:08 pm

    Ascanio says:

I would really have expected the USB special edition to be HD.

It is disappointing to hear that it is a “standard” video (what would that mean, by the way? An MPEG-2 with DVD quality – LOW?).

How about all of us with Macs, beautiful HD screens and no BlueRay?????

    Please correct this mistake!!!

  36. September 7th, 2009 at 7:25 pm

    gary says:

The HD version will be available for download, from iTunes and other online outlets. Thanks!

    Mika says:

    Hi Gary

I’ve read teh information about the new delivery date of Objectified.
So I want to change my order @ Plexi (UK) from the normal DVD to the Bluray.

Just a little question. How can I do this. I write an email to info@plex.co.uk, but no answer till now.

And when I can change it, will there be a bag for the Bluray too. Or are they all sold out? I’ve made the preorder for the DVD at the 9th of september. I don’t want to lose the bag by changing my order :-)

Thanx a lot an keep on filming these great stuff

    Mika

  38. October 20th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

    Iulian says:

    Hello again,

It’s been a month and a half since I placed my preorder for the bluray + tote bag and, so far, I have absolutely no clue if the bluray launch has been postponed, if it’s been sent to me or not. I sent an email to info@objectifiedfilm.com two weeks ago, asking about the preorder, not even a sign.

Gary, I respect your work and I understand that unexpected production problems can occur at any moment; what I do not understand is the lack of information about the status of the preorders. I see that some people have received their discs with prior mail confirmation, others without mail confirmation. How am I supposed to know if what I paid for is on its way or not? I’ve made repeated trips to the Post Office, they haven’t received anything with my name on it.

This preorder has turned into a late order and the lack of info just adds to the frustration.

  39. October 20th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

    gary says:

lulian, apologies about this, the folks at plexi should have contacted you about the delay with the blu-ray versions shipping. will have someone reach out.

    Dave says:

    Hey Gary,

I just wanted to know if you can order the Blu Ray as a limited edition deal as well? Because I would like the film in HD, but I would also like to get the Limited Edition stuff! Please let me know!

    Many thanks

    Dave

Are the USB ltd. editions still available now in December? At first glance the site seems like it’s frozen in time. Would really like to still get one if they are available…..
