Objectified in America, this Friday

“The story of America for the past 60 years is essentially tied to the story of our stuff. From cars to clothes to refrigerators that simulate the Arctic better than, well, the Arctic, we as a culture love our objects. But as economic and environmental tides shift, we’re faced with the fact that we simply can’t continue as we have been. You might rightly argue that we’ve designed our way into this mess, but can we design our way out? Join Dwell editor Aaron Britt and our panel of thought-leaders for a discussion that touches on how we relate to the objects in our lives, how they shape the world around us, and what we can do to about it.”

If you’re in the Bay Area, please join us at a panel discussion (with drinks) this Friday evening:

Objectified in America:
Design, Consumerism and Sustainability in Our Changing Economy

With panelists Gary Hustwit, Bill Moggridge (IDEO), Philip Wood (Citizen: Citizen), and Tom Dair (Smart Design), moderated by Dwell Magazine’s Aaron Britt.

Friday, April 24th, 6:30pm to 8:30pm
AutoDesk Gallery
1 Market St. Suite 200
San Francisco

London, done

Gary, Alice, Jony, and Marc at the London Q&A. Photo by Gary Cohen.

Oh what a night! Our London Premiere was outstanding… a sold-out cinema (the grand but slightly tattered old Chelsea), and a post-film discussion with Jony Ive, Marc Newson, and Alice Rawsthorn. Thanks to Paolo and all the staff at the Chelsea for all the work, and to everyone who attended. It was really cool to see Stephen Fry, Jony, Marc, and Helvetica star Michael C. Place all in one row. The Q&A portion went well, except for an unruly microphone that kept cutting out. And another special thanks to the Pig’s Ear for hosting our after-party. Cheers!

The film will be screening again in London at the Barbican Centre cinemas starting May 22. Tickets are on sale now.

On to San Francisco!
-Gary

“Your film made me physically ill”

Those might not be the words you’d like to hear someone say after the New York premiere of your film. But in the case of Objectified, I don’t mind… in fact I think it’s a good thing. [Read Linda Tischler's review of the event for Fast Company for an explanation.]

Visual Arts Theater, New York. Photo by Andrew DeVigal.

Thanks to everyone who came to the New York events. And special thanks to Dan Formosa, Davin Stowell, Paola Antonelli, Luke Geissbuhler, and Karim Rashid for participating in the post-screening question and answer sessions, which I really enjoyed. It’s fascinating to see the way the film is affecting people, and the questions it brings up. Because I believe that documentary film is not about giving viewers answers; it’s about getting them to ask more questions about themselves and their relationship to the subject matter.

James Longley (Iraq in Fragments) pimps Objectified at Full Frame, with Andrew Berends (Delta Boys)

And another special thanks to everyone at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, where we had another fun, jam-packed screening last weekend. The folks in Durham came out in force! And it’s always great to show your film to other filmmakers, and to see what’s going on in the documentary world at the moment. And to get smashed at my new favorite bar in Durham, the Pinhook.

Up next, our sold-out premiere event in London this Thursday, with Jony Ive, Marc Newson, and Alice Rawsthorn in attendance. See you soon, Londoners.
